Radioactive Waste geological disposal in Cumbria
In 1997 Nirex put forward a proposal called the Pangea Project, in order to get rid of British high level radioactive waste in Australia The Australian parliament refused in 2000.
BNFL, Golder Associates and Swiss radioactive waste quango Nagra were all involved in the Pangea Project. They produced a promotional video:

This official short video outlines the need for "large flat, dry, remote areas" and rules out the idea of putting nuclear waste in areas where there is "high rainfall, permeable rocks, and mountains which would drive the water flow".
Funny how our government now seems to be happy to bury our highly radioactive waste in Cumbria, which has (yes you guessed it) high rainfall, permeable rocks, and mountains which would drive the water flow.

Pickles overrules council on nuclear waste
The communities secretary, Eric Pickles, has approved plans to bury 250,000 tonnes of radioactive waste at the East Northants landfill site near Peterborough. The plan was refused by Northamptonshire county council but Pickles upheld the appeal by hazardous waste disposal company Augean. The move was met with outrage among people living in Northamptonshire. In a local poll, 98% of residents voted against dumping the waste. Campaigners Kings Cliffe Waste Watchers said: "In overturning the decision of the county council, and the wishes of all local government organs, he [Ed Pickles] has hardly demonstrated the level of commitment expected from one who is trying to steer localism". The department for communities and local government defended the move. "This is an existing landfill site which handles hazardous waste," it said. "Having considered all the evidence and representations, the minister has accepted the expert planning advice that granting a temporary planning permission for additional waste would not be harmful to the local community."

How to use freshwater resources.
Today 4 million gallons of water were abstracted from Britain's favourite view - Wastwater- to cool nuclear wastes at Sellafield.. the same amount of freshwater used by three cumbrian towns daily. The high level nuke waste in Cumbria includes spent fuel, sent (by boat with military escorts) from Japan and reprocessed at Sellafield. Reprocessing is banned in the USA as the dirty old process makes already dangerous high level wastes even more dangerous.
Tomorrow 4 million gallons of freshwater will be used to cool the wastes at Sellafield ....

"The earthquake appears to be causing the greatest problems for the Fukushima Daiichi reactors, although several reactors at both sites were affected by the earthquake. Specifically , Fukushima 1-2 has lost back up power (fossil fuel ) and necessary cooling capacity (water) ".

The waste 'repository' at Drigg is almost full - radioactive waste is now being refused entry
Radioactive waste is now being refused entry from, for example, Chapel Cross, who want to dump the decommissioned magnox plant - contaminated soil and rubble into Cumbria.
Even the pro nuke MP Jamie Reed is opposed to nuke dump sites away from the Sellafield site in other parts of Cumbria.
The nuclear industry wants to dispose of 12 lorries a day of radioactive wastes in the former open cast coal mine of Keekle Head - near to the source of the river Keekle (recently featured on BBC Countryfile as an
important salmon river worth millions to the Cumbrian economy).
The radioactive wastes would leach into the land and there would be adverse impact on the environment and health of residents - cynically called "receptors" by the industry.
The planning meeting for radioactive waste in landfill will be heard on 22nd June at Kendal County Offices 11am.
The application is to put radioactive waste into Keekle Head - former open cast coal mine and near to the source of the River Keekle.

Recent changes to the planning regime - brought in to speed up project development will drastically limit the opportunity for local people and councils to scrutinise proposals. Therefore - given that the risks of this project are unknown, this is just the wrong time for the project to be put forward.
Minimal Jobs
Although the project would employ 50 people during construction, after this, during operation, the project would only provide 15 jobs.
Threat to Fish
Cumbria's rivers bring in a revenue of £60M from fish stocks -the River Keekle is an important salmon migratory route.

Opposition to nuclear waste at Keekle, Lake District

The Nuclear Industry is desperate to get rid of millions of tons of radioactive waste into landfill. The Law has been changed to allow this to happen - what's needed is for this poxy law dreamt up by the industry
and pronuke government departments to be changed. The Environmental Law Foundation is assisting in this. Until then it is a matter of firefighting each application.
Keekle Head in Cumbria is the latest - following a successful campaign to refuse radioactive wastes in landfill at Kings Cliffe in Northamptonshire - we can be successful here in Cumbria.
There is a political consensus opposing the Keekle Head proposal with even the pro nuclear MP Jamie Reed opposing - but we need to show strong opposition - this is the thin end of a very nasty nuclear wedge - the
